Stairs that Make a Grand Entrance

A Homeowner needed access to the second level of his contemporary home. Being in an entranceway which featured floor to ceiling windows, the stairs needed high drama. We worked up sample drawings, then we collaborated closely on final design details.

As a contractor, our client knew he wanted glass, steel, and wood. Understanding the properties of carbon steel, he was aware that sanding out welds on the center stair stringer would create a charming rustic contrast with the gleaming steel and glass.

This project posed big challenges: rolling a heavy stair stringer in a helix; fitting the curved glass to the helix shape ( we used precise 3d measurements); and installation without a crane. Specially-made rollers were required, plus a hoist to lower the stair into final position
